Hootenanny
For this project, I was tasked with creating a poster featuring a dish from my cultural heritage. With my ancestry tracing back to Germany, I chose to highlight a Hootenanny, a German pancake. Unfortunately, much of my family's cultural traditions have been lost over generations, so I did not have a family recipe to reference. I selected this dish because its own history is complex and somewhat lost to time.
The design elements of the poster are intentional and symbolic. The raspberries serve as both a garnish and a representation of the red in the German flag, while the golden hue of the batter reflects the gold in the flag. The typography is a variation of blackletter, a traditional style that originated in Germany, further connecting the design to the culture. Additionally, I incorporated plates and bowls from my own kitchen to add a personal touch.
This project was a challenging yet rewarding experience, allowing me to push my creative boundaries while exploring my cultural heritage through design.

This project also included a video component, designed to maintain visual consistency with the poster. I incorporated the berries as typography and used the same plates and bowls to create a cohesive aesthetic. The sequence in which the ingredients are added mirrors the composition of the poster, following a deliberate visual flow that leads to the final product.
The soundtrack, We’re Going to Be Friends by The White Stripes, evokes a strong sense of nostalgia, reminding me of childhood moments spent listening to it with my family. To enhance the warmth and comfort I wanted the video to convey, I utilized only warm-toned lighting, reinforcing the inviting atmosphere. I am highly pleased with the outcome of this piece and believe it was executed effectively.
